Paulsen was selected by the Black Lance conspiracy due to his mindless corruptability and hunger for power. But he wasn't really cut out to run the Lexington. He took over from Captain Eisen when they conspiracy found that Eisen could not be persuaded to join the project, and was supplying the Border Worlds information. He botches up everything by losing Eisen, the other defectors and the Lexington herself, and Seether "reassigns" him elsehere with the help of a very sharp knife.
